Thank you for an excellent surgery. The surgery was more complicated
than it would have been if I acted sooner.
On the day of the surgery, I arrived at the hospital with a large loop of intestine that
had worked its way through the hernia and down into my scrotum, where it did not belong.
The only pain relief I required even on the evening after the surgery
was two Tylenols at bed-time. I had a prescription for a stronger medicine
but never had to use it.
The afternoon after the surgery I drank some ginger ale as soon as I was steady on my feet I took a long walk with one of my
nurses, I could not believe it. They
rewarded me with a delicious sandwich which I gladly ate. By comparison, one of my
friends had the older method used by his doctor and it took him a few days until
he really felt like moving at all.
Later that afternoon I was released and my son drove me home to my
apartment where I walked indoors for over 30 minutes. Normally for me that is about 2 miles.
After that, I told my son I was OK and he went back to his house. The next day, I had predicted tenderness but I was able to walk 30-45
minutes several times during the day. Wow!!!
This was on Saturday. I took it easy and did most of my usual activities and my walking.
That really
made a difference.
Sunday morning at 10 a.m. I attended a spirituality class which I
help facilitate. I climbed many stairs with NO problem. Remember,
this was less than 48 hours, two days after the surgery. Then, I
attended services from 11 a.m. to noon and a board meeting from 12
to 1 p.m.
Monday, I worked a full eight hours at my office seeing the usual number of
patients. My work requires a lot of physical movement and upward reaching. No problem.
Same thing on Tuesday and since.
As a health care professional, I know that all surgeons are not created equal. I do
"pre-op" and "post-op" care on cataract and laser refractive
surgery patients in my practice. I see the BEFORE and AFTER. There ARE differences with different surgeons.
Please feel free to share this letter with anyone who has a hernia. Readers, DO NOT WAIT, like NIKE says, "JUST DO IT." And remember, NO ONE in my opinion does
it better than Dr. Grischkan. Just ask me. I check it out BEFORE I came to him.
Sincerely,
Dr. Erwin Jay, O.D.
