Hernia Focus: Incisional Hernias

Incisional hernias result from the breakdown of a previous surgical incision. These arise most commonly as a result of infection or a hematoma (the collection of blood in an incision) following a surgical procedure. Additionally, tension in the surgical closure of the abdomen can lead to a disruption of the tissues. The result is an unsightly bulge which left alone can lead to numerous complications. Some studies have suggested that incisional hernias can occur in as much as 15% to 20% of abdominal operations.

Our specialized technique of repairing these incisional hernias incorporates the latest technological developments in hernia surgery. Lasers are utilized to provide a very precise dissection and protect vital structures. Large hernias are bridged with the latest generation mesh secured in place with the Shouldice principles of effective hernia repair.

As a result of our tremendous experience with incisional hernias and our outstanding success rate, many patients from all over the country have traveled to the Hernia Center of Ohio after experiencing numerous failures. Our specialized surgical technique, coupled with a special expertise in the field, has given many of these patients a new lease on life.
